Some Queries and Their Answer

Q1: I' a 2011 B.Tech(IT) passed out. I have applied for gate 2012. My query is that In the instructions they said that if your Qualifying Degree in 2011 You should attach the Copy of Degree Certificate. But we still didn't have our graduation day so we don't have degree certificates as of now.in such case what else we should attach to the application while sending? pls do guide us.

A1 :See as u passed in year 2011 June (most probably) , it is considered that by this time distribution of degree certificate will be over. but as in case of yours , Graduation date is not yet finalised so You can attach the Provisional Degree Certificate. Colleges Provide this certificate for admission in higher education (Master Degree) in other institutes, as final degree will take time to get printed and distributed.
So You just need to ask your college for Provisional Degree Certificate for applying in GATE 2012 and sending the form to respective IIT.

Q2 :What is the purpose of Certificate from Principal?
I have backlogs in I, V & VI semesters. Will this cause any problem for admission in IITs (especially for direct admission without any interview or written test) ?

A2 :The Certificate From Principal is made for final year student only and to those who had given final year examination i.e. Passing out in 2012  if u clear all your backlogs by then , you will be eligible to attend the counselling and take admission. if u clear all your backlogs by then , you will be eligible to attend the counselling and take admission.
with any backlog in any sem , you will not be eligible for admission, as they will require Degree Certificate during admission process.
but as u will be able to produce your all cleared degree certificate by Sept'12 then there is chance of getting admission. u just need to produce there that you have given paper, and results are awaiting.

Q3: ,I have applied for gate 2012 but i cant confirm my application because whenever i m choosing OBC as  my category and clicking next ,after confirmation  the application form bears category -No i dont know why. I have tried a lot many times but the same result. Please tell me what should I do?

A3: On looking to your problem, i had tried to fill form.
there might be case that On pressing the Proceed button if the browser does not take you to next page, carefully look into the right hand side corner of each box or below the box
for details of any invalid entries (displayed in red color). may be some entries you would have to mentioned.

or

just clear the cookies from your browser.

Q4:I have applied for GATE 2012 in Production and Industrial Engineering discipline. But i would like to change the discipline to Mechanical Engineering. Is it possible to change the discipline and if so how can i proceed. Or else is there any option of scraping my previous application and send them a fresh application ???  Pls reply me in this regard.

A4 :It is possible to change your discipline but its depends on how much you inside you reached, it means if you are done till filling personal information, academic details and identification details page then you just need to log out and re-login again. Try re-login whenever you feel you went wrong on filling form.
else last option start with a new scratch for a safe side.

Q5 :  I had a mistake while entering my  pincode in my application form. How to correct that error? Please reply as soon as possible

A5 :Pin code error is not a big error , so don't panic on that. If you paid the fees by this time then you will not be able to edit the application form, but if you still in some stage to fill the form, then just go previous and edit the fields you want to edit
As error in pin code is not a big deal , so just relax.

Q6 : i am 2011 pass-out student and have done BE. i want to know that it is compulsory to send Degree certificate with the gate form?

A6 :In case you are not having Degree certificate then you can send a provisional degree certificate.
Actually in some college/university it will take some time to issue degree certificate , so in case of admission for higher education, college/university provide a provisional degree certificate for further admission. you can ask for provisional certificate from your college.

Tips for Gate

How does one prepare for GATE.

Before the marathon begins, the ‘runner’ puts in months, even years, of effort before he actually runs the race. As the saying goes – get your fundamentals right. GATE is an exam that tests you on your fundamentals. The questions are generally derivations of the fundamentals.
Preparation for GATE is an ongoing process, and is supposed to happen in stages. First get your fundamentals right, and then test yourself on those fundamentals. When you have done this, you should pit yourself with the competition, which means a mock test which would give you a percentile to let you know where you stand amongst competitors.
How do you choose which coaching material to go with. This is something that is quite subjective. A coaching material cannot be assessed until you have gone through it. So, you could go by the word of your seniors as to what coaching material they followed to prepare for GATE.
Here are some parameters on which you can decide whether you should go for a particular coaching institute, use a particular coaching material, or tests:

1. Uniqueness in their study material: Study material provided by the coaching institutes is of little assistance if they are compact copy-paste or rewrite of materials taken from other books. If the reading of such material doesn’t increase interest and enjoyment then they are not worth it. There are plenty of standard books on each subject by good authors, which can make your study enjoyable during preparation.
2. Collection of quality books in their library: During the process of theory conceptualization and building application capabilities, you need good books, which can really put your brain on exercise. Check out their library!
3. Flexibility in the Coaching Model: What happens when your pace of learning is much faster or slower than the average? Is there any mechanism by which the model can identify exactly where you need help and provide the same? Is it possible in that coaching model to minimize the wastage of your time?
4. Quality of questions discussed: Number of questions discussed is not that important. By discussing and solving 10-15 conceptual questions on each topic you can build a good application capability. On the other hand solving many tricky non-conceptual questions will simply waste your time.
5. Tests and evaluation model: How is the progress of your preparation tested and analyzed? To what extent the feedback helps in identifying the areas for further work? Here I must say that this is the most crucial part of the preparation. This is the area where most of the students fail due to lack of proper test materials which can help them to build in themselves a real-test-like environment and temperament. Once you are able to choose the correct assistance for your GATE journey, it will be an enjoying and thrilling experience.
Here are some things apart from working on your engineering concepts, that you should do for a complete preparation for GATE:
1. Solve previous years GATE papers: Solving previous years papers gives you a fair idea of what the actual paper would be like. It also brushes up your basics and exposes your ‘areas of improvement’.
2. Solve test papers: Solve as many test papers as possible. This actually is the best way to keep improving as you prepare for GATE.
3. Analyze : Analyzing your test results is a very important part of taking the test. If you do not analyze, the test does not add value. You should minutely analyze and define as to where you could have scored more; analyze your accuracy rates in various topics and maintain a topic wise datasheet which lists your performance topic wise for different test papers.
4. Simulate actual test environment : This is very important. The actual test happens in a classroom, and is timed. When you take up the test, switch off your cell phone, have a timer which times your tests, and avoid taking any breaks. Also, if possible, take up a mock test series which enables you to take the test in a classroom environment.

GATE Preparation Tips:-
  • GATE mainly tests the fundamentals. So make sure you make your fundamentals very strong & clear. This only comes with the practice.
  • Always follow standard books
  • Make notes short and concise
  • Maintain formulas, short-cuts and tips/tricks in notes
  • Try to cover complete syllabus. If not possible expertise in what ever portion of syllabus you practice.
  • Try preparing notes after reading every chapter/topic
  • Every field of study has its own vocabulary, so identify words and terms used to represent specific concepts. Maintain them in your notes.
  • Group study is one of the best ways of preparation. Divide sections/topics between you and your partner and have a brief session on topic from your friend before you actually start topic. This will save your time and efforts and will improve your and your partner’s understanding on the topic.

M.E / M. Tech Entrance and it's scope

M. Tech/ME - The Course
In India, a Master of Engineering (ME) or Master of Technology (M. Tech) degree is a postgraduate program in engineering or technology. This is a 2-years program in a specific branch of engineering or a technical field. Generally a student enters the ME/MTech programs after the completion of the 4-year undergraduate program in engineering after being certified a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Technology degree, or a 5-year program in Science or Applied Sciences resulting in the award of a Master of Science degree. This is a course of 2 years span, having 4 semesters.
Minimum Requirements for M.Tech.
Candidates having valid GATE score and
Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Technology / Architecture, or
Master's degree in Mathematics / Physics / Life Science / related subjects, or
Candidates yet to appear in the final examination for the above qualifying degree [(i) or (ii)] and whose results are likely to be declared by July, 2010,or
Associate Membership holders of the professional bodies for admission into their parent disciplines from the following:
The Institution of Engineers (India) (AMIE)
The Aeronautical Society of India (AESI) (eligible only for aerodynamics, structures and propulsions streams)
The Indian Institute of Metals (AMIIM)
The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, including Polymer and Environmental Group (AMIIChemE)
The Institution of Electronics and Tele-communication Engineering (AMIETE)
Scope after M. Tech or ME
As the sum of human knowledge increases and business gets more sophisticated across the world. It is not merely technology literacy that would serve the industry. Student has to through for a complete range of experience. Most of the government sectors and big entrepreneurs ask for M. Tech or ME graduates, since they consider these candidates to be more imaginative than the normal B. Tech or BE graduates. Opportunities exists a lot  after a master degree in Engineering.
It has been noted that now jobs in government sectors too tender lucrative offers. These jobs are more likely to be preferred because of its nature, high pay scale, reputation, security and more importantly serving the nation is always a matter of pride.
Government agencies and a lot of Public Sector Undertakings (PSU) under the aegis of Government of India regularly provide employment opportunities in various areas of technology and the path opens after your master degree. Visit the following link (Must see)
http://india.gov.in/citizen/PSU.php
A student could go for teaching profession, excel in research area in IT/Software etc after pursuing ME/M. Tech..
After M.Tech one can join as an scientist in DRDO - Defence Research & Development organization, ISRO - Indian Space Research Organization etc. Preferably Public Sector Undertaking recruits M. Tech engineers. Private sector also gives importance M.Tech student over B.Tech Student for recruitment.
Just click the following links to know the scope of jobs:
Indian Space Research Organization: http://www.isro.org/scripts/job.aspx
Monster Job Search: http://jobsearch.monsterindia.com/searchresult.html?fts=mtech&loc=
A student could go for teaching profession, excel in research area in IT/Software etc after pursuing ME/M. Tech..
A master student in engineering can always get placed in a better position in industry, than that of a graduate. Keeping in mind the current need of industry and competitive edge most of the BE or BTech graduates prefer to do MTech after qualifying GATE. Thus it is highly important for a Graduate to pursue his/her MTech degree from a prestigious institute. Doing MTech from a normal engineering college and doing the same from IITs, IIS or NITs is a different thing altogether. All you need is a good GATE Score.  The advantage of doing MTech from these institutions is that when you are in your final semester you are likely to get placements through campus recruitments.

Do's and Don'ts for GATE Entrance

Do's
Try to clear your concepts by solving questions.
Refer the GATE syllabus and study topic by topic and then solve objective questions.
Develop the art of adopting tricks for solving objective questions.
Solve previous years GATE questions. Analyze and solve questions from different concept, which would enable you to learn new concepts.
Solve questions from related topics form other subject of GATE papers and IES questions.
Cover every topic so that at least you can attempt easy questions.
Keep your formula list ready so that you can go for quick revision before the actual exam.
Don’ts
Don’t read too many books only refer reference books.
Don’t believe in Indian publisher's books, as there are very few good books in market.
Don’t spend much time in reading theories, try to build concept only, as concept is the king in GATE.
Don’t leave any topic; try to cover every topic as it would help to solve at least easy questions.
Don’t refer too many book for solving objective question, rather you solve questions from GATE and IES.
Don’t solve many questions, solve only quality questions.
Don’t ignore Mathematics as one can score high marks in it.

GATE study tips and tricks

Deep understanding of fundamentals: .
Right understanding of fundamentals is the key to GATE success, as we know GATE entrance is all about testing the fundamentals and questions are based on origin of the fundamentals. Involve yourself in this ongoing process of GATE preparation and the first stage should be placing yourself at the peak by getting your fundamentals right and then testing yourself.
Needless to mention as you might have heard it many times before. But it is true - hard work pays off. If you want to succeed in GATE you have to practice, practice and practice. You have to love the efforts by self motivating which are the only lasting factors besides fear and reward. Just ignore the mistakes and errors as rightly said - If you're not making mistakes, then you're not doing anything. If you believe in yourself and have the courage, the competitive drive could be achieved.
"People of mediocre ability sometimes achieve outstanding success because they don't know when to quit.  Most men succeed because they are determined to."  -- George Allen
Selecting the right coach
Coaching could provide mutual model of communication, inspire the student and develop the highest potential in him/her. It is important to be coached by professionals for GATE preparation. Selecting the right coach and right study material is a difficult deal altogether. Seek for the advice of your seniors and faculties whom you trust. Standard of material, Testing scheme, Reporting, Faculty deliverance in classroom, student strength, past track record are few parameters you must consider before enrolling. The coaching model and mechanism should be flexible enough to let you know where you went wrong and smooth the friction of your efforts in cracking GATE.
As we know GATE is a multiple choice examination throw yourself into the habit of solving relevant objective questions rapidly, right after you finish studying a particular subject. Solving previous year GATE question papers would let you know where you stand. Group discussions are another way of promoting your self esteem.
What is unique about the study materials that are offered by the coaching institute? The study material hardly could assist you if it has been directly extracted from textbooks. The coaching material should be short, to the point, summarized and well researched to inculcate interest in you. The tests should cover every area of testing and the test report should highlight your mistakes and your rank. You should enjoy reading textbooks available in the book store published by good authors.
Do they have enough books in library? You need good books that would instigate your brain to function during the process of theory conceptualizing and application building tricks.
Classroom rehearsal: Who are the faculties and their teaching experience would matter a lot for you in classroom. It is only selected conceptual questions on each topic could develop application capability contrary non-conceptual questions will waste your precious time.
Testing and reporting: The testing and evaluation model offered by the coach is equally important. Your progress chart, errors reporting, comparative rank of the feedback system would guide you correctly.
Add more fuel:
Solving GATE papers: Read and solve the previous years' GATE question papers and get inspired to solve more and more of similar papers in future. Solving the papers gives you idea of the standard of questions that are being raised.
Monitoring your performance: Analyze your test performance to determine how things could be improved, how could you score more? Scrutinize your performance of each topic and plan your strategy accordingly. Monitor your rank.
An actual testing environment: Classroom is the place where the actual test happens. While appearing the test take it seriously, avoid disruption, and set your clock rightly. However if you have enrolled for a correspondence coaching you can set a similar environment at you home.
Summary:
Strong Knowledge of Fundamentals and Concepts + Accuracy + Speed is the key to your GATE success.
Select the right coach. Don't forget today it is not the classroom that is the repository of publicity, but the advertising agencies.
Always focus on the concepts.
Don't walk into volumes of theory without understanding the root of what's essential for you.
Follow good text books available in market.
Dedicate for a study of 8 to10 hrs everyday to cover the syllabus.
After reaching the comfort zone of preparation, appear for some mock exams. Appearing a mock test would let you know where you stand in this race amongst other aspirants.
Practice previous year GATE papers continuously.
Monitor your performance.

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) techniques

Cautious vs. Bold Approach

Candidates appearing for multiple choice questions (MCQ) papers in which the general trend is to deduct marks for each wrong answer that they attempt. Evidently students omit many questions for fear of losing marks where there is negative marking. It has been noted that those who omit more questions out of fear are not necessarily much less competent than those who omit few questions. It is certainly a burning issue whether it is right to answer those "uncertainly and not ignorant" types of questions.
Candidates attempting MCQ pattern question papers are habitually unsure about how many questions they should appear in order to do justice to their knowledge and preparation. In this context a relatively bolder approach where students are reasonably sure of the correct answer is recommended. Attempting all questions with a random guess of 50% chance of being correct, and attempt based on some knowledge should increase the probability and so improve the score.

Student should collect previous question papers for this self assessment with different techniques (i.e., cautious vs. bold) and compare the marks to know which technique is effective for them. Students consistently obtaining high score out of their factual guessing are recommended to adopt a bolder strategy in MCQ examination. Guesses based on some knowledge of the subject are more likely to be right than wrong, contrary wild guessing on the basis of total ignorance is likely to lose marks.
However factors like (How genuine and important is the paper, examination condition, consequence of attempting test) may limit our self evaluation. The real heat could be only felt in examination hall.

How to prepare for GATE Entrance

Introspection and self analysis is the best key .

Follow standard textbooks referred by your faculties.
Read the concepts to the depth, visualize and then understand.
Imagine how and where they could be helpful and could be applied practically.
Exercise problems which are given at the end of each chapter of your textbook should be solved analytically.  Don't spend your precious time solving too many questions. Contrary you should target questions that could be helpful only for your GATE preparation.
Reading two different subjects simultaneously is recommended as it would boost a sense of closeness towards your target and you won't feel bored too.
As we know GATE is a multiple choice examination throw yourself into the habit of solving relevant objective questions rapidly, right after you finish studying a particular subject. Solving previous year GATE question papers would let you know where you stand. Group discussions are another way of promoting your self esteem.
Read the subject by posing questions like " What " , " How " and " Why ". Don't take anything for granted unless you justify it by working out on papers.

Think Positive

Never worry if you performance in university examination is unsatisfactory, as your university percentage has nothing to do with your GATE score. GATE is entirely a different journey.
Dedicated 2 - 3 months studies could help you scoring a better rank even if you have escaped your university studies.

Have fun while you learn:

Needless to mention the life as an undergraduate and those four years of your B.Tech are the best days of your academic life. Enjoy them to the fullest. Missing an important lecture and going for a movie, reaming with your classmates, playing your favorite game, late hour discussion and chat, managing your profile in facebook. There are so many beautiful things to enjoy. Don't miss them. Seize these golden memories. Take studies as a part of your life it is not everything.
